Community-Based Support Services

Senior Daily Living Centers

Our centers provide adult day services to offer a safe, comfortable and secure daytime “home away from home” for senior adults whose caregivers must work or tend to other responsibilities. The program and team members focus on the physical, cognitive and spiritual well-being of each person.

Generations together, the Altoona center is unique in that it is in the same building as the  Growing Years Early Learning Center , allowing for intergenerational activities with children and seniors. The many activities offer your loved one physical and cognitive stimulation and socialization on a regular basis. We have a variety of fun and engaging programs and events, including holiday parties, birthday celebrations, open houses and more.

The centers offers a variety of services to meet the needs of your loved one. We invite you and your loved one to tour our program. This  provides an opportunity to introduce your loved one to the participants and team members, allows him or her to participate in the many therapeutic and fun activities and see if the program is right for them. This also gives the team members an opportunity to evaluate the needs of your loved one and how we can meet those needs.

Is the Senior Daily Living Center Right for You and Your Loved One?

Are you increasingly worried about the health and safety of an elderly loved one who:
  • Needs regular health check-ups and cannot take prescribed medications without supervision?
  • Can no longer be alone at home safely (e.g., wanders)?
  • Requires assistance with personal care, such as eating, bathing, or dressing?
  • Is more and more confused or forgetful?
  • Has Alzheimer’s disease or memory loss?
  • Is becoming increasingly dependent on your time and energy?
Are you increasingly worried about the isolation or inactivity of a family member who:
  • Has lost interest in hobbies or trying something new?
  • Does not socialize or stay in touch with friends?
  • Needs something to do with his or her time?
  • Isn’t eating well unless you plan for or prepare meals?
  • Is alone a lot, and doesn’t get out of the house much?
  • Is losing physical strength, in part due to lack of exercise?
Are you providing care for – or worrying about – an elderly family member?
  • Are you neglecting your own health?
  • Do you have outstanding errands on your “to do list?”
  • Are you working or want to find a job?
  • Do you feel overwhelmed, or like you’re falling behind?
  • Have you cut back on your own personal interests?
  • Do you keep postponing your visits with friends and family, or the class you have been thinking about?
  • Would rest from full-time care help you to be an even better caregiver?

If you said “yes” to any of these questions, the Senior Daily Living Center can share the caring so that you can be at your best.

Locations & Cost:

Full and half day options and rates are available. We look forward to discussing how we can assist you and your loved one and which options would accommodate you the best. In comparison to other options, care at the SDLC for five days a week is less than half the cost of a room in a personal care facility and less than a quarter of home health care for a similar number of hours. The rate includes breakfast, snacks, activities, socialization, nursing services and assistance with basic care such as grooming, personal hygiene and incontinence care. Bathing services are also available for an additional fee.

Services can be paid for privately or subsidized by Blair Senior Services, PA Department of Aging Waiver Program or Veterans Administration, depending on eligibility. We can help you apply for assistance.

If you need additional assistance at home, our staff team members would be happy to assist you in arranging for services through our in-home program, ALSM at Home or other community programs. If your doctor decides you need additional assistance, we can provide help with personal care or skilled nursing at one of our three campuses: The Lutheran Home at Hollidaysburg, The Lutheran Home at Johnstown and The Oaks at Pleasant Gap.We can also arrange any type of service you would need, including health and medication monitoring.

Our Senior Daily Living Centers are licensed by the Department of Aging. Formerly Adult Day Activities Program, SDLC has been in Blair County since 1983. Our Senior Daily Living Centers are funded in part by Blair Senior Services and the Area Agency of Aging of Somerset County.
